Obscurity is Not An Option

Matthew 5:13-15 say, “13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.”

Have you ever felt like you’ve gotten lost amongst the shuffle of life?  That you are just another worker at your job, and your true attributes are being smothered by the demands and expectations of everyone around you?  All too often we forget that we are to be distinctively different.  We are not to conform or emulate those around us. We must never forget that God created each and every one of us with unique giftings, talents, abilities, and yes…even personalities.  However, sometimes as a result of a need to fit in, to flow with the crowd,  or the social norms in our environments, we tend to hide who God created us to be.  In doing so, the essence of who we really are is hidden and made ineffectual.  In essence, because we’re hiding who we are under the auspices or label of other’s expectations, our true value and effectiveness is in a place of obscurity.

Obscurity can have its advantages in certain periods in your life. However, God never intended  for you to stay in an obscure place.  Obscurity in this sense means that you are tied to the normal, mundane, routine pattern in life and cannot muster up the courage and tenacity to do and be different!  Understanding and being able to celebrate your own uniqueness and difference is the key to living a confident and victorious life.  Christ says, that we are the salt of the earth.  We are the people that should influence corporations, governments, churches, and society.  If we conform to the standards and expectations around us, we are not fit but to be thrown out and trampled under the feet of men.  I don’t know about you, but I do not want to live in a perpetual state of obscurity, where there is nothing unique about me, and there is nothing special I bring to the table.  Out of all the billions of people in the world, you are the only person with your thumb print.  You are so distinct that if you were lost, they could send out dogs who smell your scent to come and find you.  You are so UNIQUE!

Many times people are looking to us to be a light, but obscurity will cause us to hide our light under a basket and refuse to let the effervescence and brilliance that’s within us shine forth.  Certain experiences, trials, and tribulations in life can push us into a place of obscurity.  But today, make a declaration and a life decision that obscurity is not an option for me!  I’m going to let my light shine, because there is someone that can benefit from my smile, my encouraging word, and my testimony.  And when you make that declaration, God will make your light stronger and even brighter.  Today, go ahead, dust that light off and be salty… You have something brilliant people need to see!  Show forth God’s goodness and His Grace.

Obscurity Is Not An Option
Pastor Derrick Phillips

Father, I pray for every reader today.  I pray that you will remind them of their significance and their value.  Father, I pray today that you will open opportunities for them to let their light so shine before men so that you will be glorified!  I pray that you will increase their confidence and their esteem, so that they will never return to a place of obscurity ever again.  I praise you for all of the good things that are coming!  In Jesus’ Name. Amen!
